Personal computers today are everywhere, but ICT consumerization added complex problems that many small and medium size companies are not prepared to face: diversity of platforms and applications, waste of time and money to support them, layers of complexity as legacy systems are not replaced by updated ones, dilemma on internal or outsourced suppliers of services, lost control on data archival due to uncontrolled proliferation of "free" cloud archival solutions, and so on.
Even if you are a large corporation with a top IT department, very often people is too busy in managing the day by day activities to have time to step back and think and innovate or to remain up to date on current technology trends.
ICT must add value to your business, and never be a pure cost: too often infrastructures and applications are designed without considering the true needs of business and without a clear timeframe that specifies when these must be available to be useful. Naïf approaches often cause oversized efforts and investments (with waste of time and money) or underestimation of impact of new initiatives (leaving the company without key tools and applications), and all this is due to the lack of perspective and balance between "business as usual" and "innovation".
The key is to have at your side someone who is knowledgeable about the latest "jargon" of ICT but that is also aware of what your company really needs and can exploit at best, and that can bring an "injection" of ideas from outside or be just a "sparring partner" to brainstorm with your team, or search and test potential solutions to specific needs.
